Robocop Viral Campaign Features The New ED-209
With only a week away from Comic-Con in San Diego, Sony has launched a new viral campaign to build excitement and awareness for the new remake from director José Padilha, Robocop. The film will not be released until August 9th 2013 but the new viral campaign serves as a first look at the new movie.
The new viral campaign is centered on a commercial for OmniCorp, the weapon’s manufacture who “runs” old Detroit in the 1987 cult classic. If you go to OmniCorp.com, you can check out a new commercial, highlighting their combat weapon ED-209, ready to patrol the streets of Detroit. It also teases a new weapon called the RC-2000, that bridges together, as the video puts it, “human resources and robotic engineering.” Care to take a guess what the new weapon could be?
On the site, OmniCorp lists the new version of ED-209 as “Battlefield Tested. Available To Protect Your City.” This just sounds like a bad idea ready to happen. The new ED-209 looks too much like a reject from the Transformers movie. It doesn’t look at all practical and perhaps too spaced-age for the “realism” the new remake is going for. Based on the ED-209 design, maybe Robocop will look just as slick, mirroring a mech suit from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra than a menacing figure from Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 film.
The commercial also highlights a new piece of machinery called XT-908 aerial drones oversees the violent city from the sky. It ends with the unintentionally hilarious tagline, “OmniCorp: We Got The Future Under Control.” This video looks like a spoof of a corporate instructional video than anything else. Is this supposed to be satirical? And if so, what is it satirizing? It feels like the fake commercials from the original Robocop without the context.
Robocop will features Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Laurie and Abbie Cornish.
