abrahamAfter a two-month hiatus, The Walking Dead will return with new episodes tomorrow night. Wrapping up season four and setting up season five will not be an easy thing to do. There are still some burning questions out there that the series’ writers have yet to answer, such as who fed the zombies rats at the prison fences, what was the mysterious message on the radio, will Tyreese discover that Carol killed his beloved Karen, and what really happened to baby Judith Grimes? Before the season four premiere back in October 2013, Robert Kirkman teased the addition of three new characters Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene from the widely popular comic book series to the TV series.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Walking Dead creator opened up about the new characters, and when they will appear on the series. Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene are fan-favorites, so getting these characters right is important to the writers and producers. Kirkman explained:

These characters are going to be extremely similar to who they were in the comics and I’m really excited about that. The visuals and costuming for them has been absolutely amazing. These people really do look like they were torn out of the comic page, it’s pretty startling. But I will say people excited for the introduction of these characters won’t have to wait very long.

I don’t want to reveal exactly when they’ll be introduced, but it won’t be too terribly late in the season so get your hopes up. They really are going to add a very interesting and very compelling dynamic to the show. I think they’re going to bring in elements to the show that we’ve never really explored before and I think that’s exciting and something that’s going to change the game to a certain extent.

Some thought that Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene could have appeared in the mid-season finale, like how Tyreese was introduced in the mid-season finale the year before, and how Michonne arrived in the finale of season two. Now it seems that there might be a good chance that these new characters might be introduced in either the season four finale episode or the penultimate episode of the season. Either way, it’s exciting that The Walking Dead will feature new blood in its cast.

SPOILERS FOR THE WALKING DEAD COMICS BELOW

If you’ve read Kirkman’s comics, then you know that Rick’s group meets the new trio on their way to Washington D.C. after the prison storyline. Eugene claims to be part of a think tank that has discovered the origins of the zombie apocalypse and more importantly how to stop the threat. It’s unclear if the series’ writers will adhere to the comics in this respect, but fans of both the book and the series should be treated with the appearance of new actors Michael Cudlitz (Abraham), Christian Serratos (Rosita), and Josh McDermitt (Eugene).

AMC recently released seven new images from the mid-season premiere. The pictures show Glenn at the end of a zombie melee, while Daryl looks badass, as always. We get a better look at Michonne’s new zombie pets, while Rick and Carl are on their own. It seems like a major character might die at the end of the premiere episode. I’d put my money on Glenn getting the axe when all is said and done.

The Walking Dead returns with the mid-season premiere episode “After” on Sunday, February 9, on AMC.
