Riddick Scores A Violent New Red Band Trailer And TV Spot

Not afraid of the dark, but I am afraid of machetes.

Riddick (Vin Diesel) really wants you to know that this isn’t his first rodeo, that he’s been left for dead and counted out many times before, and that he’s always bounced back. At least that’s the idea you get from this latest TV spot for his upcoming third go round on the silver screen, Riddick. He also wants you to know that this badass new red band trailer just came out, too. It’s a good day to watch Vin Diesel kick ass.

Though this current situation is nothing new—he’s been pursued by bounty hunters plenty of times, and even battled vicious alien creatures on a planet he thought was deserted—there is one thing that does look like something you haven’t seen before. I don’t ever recall it raining quite as hard as it does in this video. Granted, between Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick, I’ve only spent a few hours total with the man, but he frequents warm, dry climates. Perhaps that’s just the corner of the universe where he spends the bulk of his time, like maybe he lives in the Arizona of space.

While that TV spot is all well and good, it’s this red band trailer that gives you what you really want. It plays a little like an expanded version of the commercial, only with all of the blood and violence that makes Riddick an R-rated affair. I won’t say too much about this video, watch it and judge yourself, but come on, he kicks a machete through a dude’s head. It’s a bit of a spoiler because now we know who dies, but who the hell cares because like I said, he kicks a machete through a dude’s head. If there was even a little skepticism before, that’s gone, just evaporated in to thin air.

Here’s the situation in the film. See Riddick is just out for vacation, hanging out on what he thinks is a nice secluded, sunny planet where he can be alone and work on his tan. Turns out, there are a bunch of big, vicious creatures already there, and they take exception to Riddick encroaching on their turf. So they rumble. No big thing, he’s not afraid to throw down, that’s just how he rolls. Eventually Riddick decides he’s had enough and needs to get out of there, but he has no ride, and the only way off this stupid ass rock is to reveal his location to a bunch of bounty hunters. They’re always after him because he’s such a badass outlaw. When they show up, things get really interesting. And apparently it starts to rain, so pretty much anything that can go wrong during a day at the beach does.

There’s a big Riddick panel scheduled for today at San Diego Comic-Con, so we’ll probably have even more news to talk about before too awful long. But for the time being we can sit back, watch these two videos, and soak in an action packed good time.

Just the fact that we’re seeing another movie is a minor miracle. After Chronicles stumbled at the box office in 2004, it’s been an uphill battle to procure funding, and production actually stopped completely a couple of time. Directed by David Twohy, Riddick also stars Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Molla, Bokeem Woodbine, Dave Bautista, and that cool looking space dog. It opens September 6 in IMAX.
