Riddick Rustles Up A New Trailer And Two More TV Spots

While Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium is poised to deliver a dose of heavily politicized science fiction, Vin Diesel and David Twohy have prepared an injection of straight up genre ass kicking. Riddick, the third in their “Furyan Chronicles,” hits theaters in IMAX on September 6, and promises to be a bloody, violent good time, full to overflowing with monsters and bounty hunters. We’ve seen a steady stream of hype since San Diego Comic-Con, and now we have a new trailer, and two quick TV spots as a chaser.
This latest video is similar to what is already floating around out there, which is to say it makes Riddick looks totally badass. Content wise there is a little bit of new footage, but this is basically an edited version of the recent red band trailer, only with less blood and violence. For instance, you don’t see the machete that Riddick (Diesel) kicks go completely through Jordi Molla’s head.
From the beginning, Diesel and Twohy have made it a point to place Riddick more in line with the smaller, gritty first film in the series, Pitch Black, than with the bloated, overblown sequel, Chronicles of Riddick. This trend continues, as this trailer mentions Pitch Black, but, strangely enough, neglects to say anything at all about Chronicles. It’s like how M. Night Shyamalan’s name was nowhere near the marketing for After Earth. It’ll be nice to get back to that tough, R-rated action of the first film, rather than the watered down, PG-13 friendly sequel.
After leaving the Necromongers—which you can explore via this motion comic—Riddick finds himself stranded on a desolate, sun-scorched planet. When the vicious creatures who live there take exception to his presence, he is, once again, in a fight for his life. His only avenue of escape is to reveal his presence to the bounty hunters that dog him across the galaxy, and hitch a ride off the rock.
The first TV spot shows a lot the monster action, and reinforces the fact that, if you’re somehow lucky enough to actually get Riddick in chains in the first place, you damn well better make sure that you don’t take them off. That’s just spells trouble for everyone involved. Tying him up like that just makes him mad. It also teases something we’ve heard before, that the movie contains at least a few seconds of side boob from co-star Katee Sackhoff. So if you’re into that sort of thing, you have that to look forward to.
In the second commercial spot, Riddick makes it clear that everyone, bounty hunters, assassins, creatures, “the whole damn planet,” is out to take a chunk out of him. After all, that’s one hell of a prize to put on your mantel, a piece of the most wanted man in the galaxy. It’s also apparent that Sackhoff’s character, Dahl, is something of a sniper.
