The surprise success of The Purge in 2013 spurred Universal and Blumhouse Productions to produce a sequel as soon as possible. The Purge: Anarchy will supposedly take place during the events of the first film, just in another part of the country. While the first movie was an isolated entry into the home invasion genre, it seems like its sequel will open up the world, taking it to the mean streets of Los Angeles. Universal released the first teaser trailer for The Purge: Anarchy and it looks like the movie it will be the movie promised last year.

The new film follows a couple trying to get home quickly before the 12-hour period where all crime is legal. They run out of gas, and are left stranded on the side of the road. With the annual Purge about to start, can the couple survive the chaos and mayhem? I mean, who runs out of gas in the city? It just seems that’s something you’d notice before it’s too late. If I knew that The Purge is coming, then I’d prepare much better than the couple in the movie. The sequel looks like a conventional escape from terror movie, but it seems like the movie might have a twist hidden somewhere. I have a feeling that one-half of the couple deliberately caused the car to breakdown to legally kill the other. The only question is: which one did it, the nondescript guy, or the nondescript girl? We’ll have to wait to see if I’m right.

These images feature some of the action and destruction in Anarchy. We see a lot of people wearing masks during the 12-hour period of chaos and destruction, which is weird because if all crime is legal, then why wear a mask? It just seems that it goes with the territory of having a new law like The Purge Act. We also see some biker pouring beer on himself and dancing (hey man, just go crazy!), and a group of upper class-types about to kill one of their own. It’s good that they covered their furniture and paintings with plastic. It’s so hard to get blood stains out of your couch, but then again, why are they dressed so nicely if they’re worried about a mess?

I’m hoping this turns out to be smarter than what it looks like. I was a big fan of the original, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter in the series. The first film was thoughtful, as it examined the morality of unjust man-made laws, while at the same time delivering blood and gore of a genre movie. Hopefully, Anarchy will have the same complex morality and ideas that I enjoyed in the first film.

The cast of The Purge: Anarch includes Frank Grillo, Zach Gilford, Michael K. Williams, Carmen Ejogo, Kiele Sanchez, Keith Stanfied, Chad Morgan, and Zoe Borde. Michael Bay and Jason Blum produced the sequel, while James DeMonaco wrote and directed the new film.

The Purge: Anarchy will hit theaters everywhere on June 20th. Check out the new teaser poster below, and visit the newly-launched website HERE.
