New After Earth Poster Reveals A Lost Jaden Smith

Next year is poised to be one of the biggest years in science fiction. There are so many exciting new and original science fiction movies coming out in 2013 including Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, and, surprisingly, M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth. To build anticipation for the strange collaboration between Shyamalan and the film’s star and producer Will Smith, Sony has released a new poster and revealed an interesting tagline for After Earth. “1000 Years Ago, We Left For A Reason,” rests at the top of After Earth’s poster that uncovers a crashed spaceship with Jaden Smith’s Kitai Raige standing on top looking over a beautiful green landscape. The tagline and image are disjointed and makes its viewer wonder what’s in store for the film’s protagonist. This poster is classic and exciting!
A few weeks ago, Sony released the first trailer for After Earth and it was received with cheers and delight from sci-fi genre fans. The trailer was a kick in the face and revealed heavy action, high drama, and a hefty dose of special effects. The strangest thing about the trailer was it didn’t have M. Night Shyamalan’s name on it at all. It appears the once high-and-mighty director has lost good faith from genre fans and general audiences. Hopefully, he can gain some sort of traction with the release of After Earth.
After Earth follows a father and son – General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and Kitai (Jaden Smith) – who crash land on a distant planet while trying to avoid an asteroid storm. With his father slowly dying, Kitai must venture outside to brave the unknown and dangerous wilderness that waits for him. The film was written by Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) and produced by Will Smith. It’s interesting because M. Night Shyamalan is really serving as a “gun for hire” on After Earth, instead of the sole creative force.
After Earth will hit theaters everywhere on June 7th 2013.
