Pacific Rim/Robot Jox Mashup Trailer Has To Be Experienced

By Rudie Obias | Updated

Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is one of the biggest movies coming out this summer. While Japanese Anime and pop culture heavily influence the giant sci-fi film, Pacific Rim will be one of the first of its kind for American general audiences. But there is this obscure science fiction movie from the late ’80s that covered similar territory. We’re talking about Robot Jox. And because this is the Internet, somebody remade the Pacific Rim trailer with footage from Robot Jox.

Directed by Stuart Gordon (Castle Freak) and written by science fiction grand master Joe Haldeman (The Forever War), Robot Jox also features giant mechanical machines with fighter pilots inside of them. While the giant mechs in Robot Jox don’t fight giant sea monsters like in Pacific Rim, there’s still a lot of robot-on-robot action in this schlocky genre film. I mean, c’mon, there’s a giant robot with a chainsaw penis!

YouTube user Nerd of All Trades made the Pacific Rim/Robot Jox mash-up trailer. He also made the above side-by-side comparison video featuring both science fiction films. While I’ve never seen Robot Jox, after watching this fantastic mash-up trailer, I want to run out to my local video store to pick up a copy. And with character names like Achilles, Alexander, and Athena, you know Robot Jox is the type of movie that has to be experienced.

As for Pacific Rim, it will finally hit theaters in a few short weeks. While early reactions during test screenings were insanely positive, it will be interesting to see if the film’s final cut will garner the same type of enthusiasm, and whether it will be able to lure in mainstream audiences.

Pacific Rim will hit theaters everywhere on July 12, in 3D and IMAX.
