Pacific Rim Kaiju Crush

As Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim stomps towards the July 12th release date, the hits just keep on coming. Warner Bros. has just released another new banner poster, as well as a pair of character photos for the monsters versus mechs adventure.

The banner introduces us to yet another Jaeger, one of the aforementioned massive mechanoid warriors. This guy bears the name Kaiju Crush, and the implication is obviously that this bad boy crushes Kaiju—a race of big ol’ monsters that have emerged from the depths of the ocean. Seems that there’s a crack down there, a portal between worlds, one that has allowed them to enter our realm and terrorize the unsuspecting populace. Kaiju Crush also hails from New Zealand. I feel like I’m reading the stats off a baseball card, which is precisely what this poster looks like.

It’s the arrival of the Kaiju, and the destruction it brings, that inspires the human race to create the Jaegers. As the promotional material often says, they “created monsters in order to fight monsters.”

These massive mechanical weapons also require pilots—two pilots each, to be precise, minds locked together via a neural bridge—which is where the next two images come in. The first shows Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentacost—an amazing name, to be sure—the Marshall of the Pan Pacific Defense Corp, and one of these robot drivers.

Picture number two shows Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). As the battle between the humans and the Kaiju rages, the situation gets more and more dire. People are dying left and right, and the fight consumes very finite, very precious resources. When it looks like we’re down to our last go-round, a washed-up pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested rookie (Mako) must pilot a legendary but outdated Jaeger named Gipsy Danger. And they may be our last hope.
