Pacific Rim Gets Goofy With Fanmade Fourth-String Jaegers
When it came to reviews of Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, a lot of people had criticisms about how all of the monsters were relatively similar, lacking the subtle differences that could have made them truly memorable movie monsters. The human-piloted Jaeger mechs didn’t receive the same level of backlash, but their differences were almost as minimal. (Personally, none of this is a real bother.)
A Warner Bros. website app allows anyone to create and decorate their own Jaegers, and the limited amount of choices involved kind of proves my above point. But within those fixed boundaries, the Internet has come alive, and the Tumblr account 4th String Jaegers – Earth’s Last Hope compiles some of the more notable examples that people are coming up with. (“Say, I thought these guys evolved.”) It’s a fine way to pass a few minutes’ time, but we pulled out some of the more standout creations so you don’t have to. If there are any Kaiju reading the site today, I’d like to kindly ask them to turn away, just in case any of these Jaegers ever get produced; we’d like to keep the element of surprise alive.
Because you can label the robot’s country of origin, this allows for quite a bit of clever and silly mockery, as you’ll see below. (The France one killed me.)
I wonder if this guy gets a cool car.
Then, of course, there are a few more random efforts, taking full use of titling freedom.
You say robots aren’t capable of punny wordplay? I ask that you think again.
Get it? Bahaha. That user actually had six or seven extremely corny puns, and that was the best. So don’t blame me.
As a matter of fact, I took five minutes and absolutely zero creativity and created my own Jaeger, as seen below.
Whatever you do, don’t drive or make any important decisions whenever this guy is around. You will throw up all over them.
Feel free to go and make your own bots here and show us some of your work in the comment sections. I’m not saying you have to keep it clean, but keep the filth classy at least.
Be a part of the team and go check out Pacific Rim in theaters now. While we may not cancel the apocalypse, we can at least cancel out Grown Ups 2, and that seems like a far more worthy victory to me.
