Original Star Trek Flyby Opening Redone With Animation

For anyone who’s ever wondered what the original Star Trek series opening would look like redone by the animators behind the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, here’s the answer. Granted, that’s probably not what they’re going for here, but that’s what this pretty fantastic alternate opening to the classic series pulls off, in stylish fashion. Watch…

I love everything about this, save one thing: Where’s DeForest Kelly as Dr. McCoy? Here’s the actual 60s opening used on the show…

What Trekkie posers, usually people who’ve only ever seen an episode or two of the show, often don’t understand is that Dr. McCoy was always just as an important part of Star Trek as Kirk and Spock were. The modern view seems to be that the show centered around a duo, but Star Trek worked because together the three of them formed the perfect trio. That’s been overlooked recently, particularly by JJ Abrams as he works on his various franchise reboots. McCoy keeps getting the short shrift. Leaving McCoy out of this otherwise awesome alternate opening is just about the only thing it gets wrong.
