Two of the most anticipated science fiction films of the New Year are Oblivion and World War Z. While there are just a few months until both films are released – Oblivion comes out in April and World War Z in June – new images were released to build hype around the would-be blockbusters.

The first is from Oblivion starring Tom Cruise. Take a look…

A few weeks ago, the film’s first trailer was released and audiences and genre fans got a first look at the post-apocalyptic aftermath. The image is somewhat vague. Jack (Tom Cruise) appears to be captured and bound by the leader of the resistance Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman).

The film is set in the distant future, where after a war with aliens, humanity survived but the population has been almost wiped out. Now man must re-build the world. Tom Cruise plays Jack Harper, a lonely mechanic who repairs malfunctioning drones on stationed Earth. But when Jack saves a beautiful stranger named Julia (Olga Kurylenko) from a crash landing, his world begins to come into question.

While Oblivion looks like it may be something exciting, World War Z feels like it might be quite the opposite. The image below from World War Z features Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), an U.N. employee, trying to get his family out of harm’s way, a roaming herd of zombies.

The film is based on Max Brooks’ best-selling novel and has had production problems since last summer. World War Z was supposed to come out last month but was pushed to March and then later push back to June 2013. Hopefully, the final version of the film will be watchable and exciting but from the looks of the trailer, it doesn’t look like that at all.

Oblivion will hit theaters everywhere on April 19th in IMAX, while World War Z will open on June 19th.
