First Oblivion Poster Shows A Very Different New York

You might not know it from keeping up with entertainment news lately, but there are actually some really promising science fiction films in the works that have neither Trek nor Wars in their titles. Strangely enough, two of them star Tom Cruise, and neither of them involve Lord Xenu. We’ve recently seen several images from All You Need Is Kill, based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka, and now we’ve got a first look at Cruise’s other big sci-fi project, Oblivion. Check out the first official poster below.
With Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, at the very least we can bet that Oblivion will be visually striking. This poster definitely lives up to that standard, playing on apocalyptic “post-civilization” imagery we’ve seen before but putting a unique spin on it. I really dig the gizmo at the bottom as well. A speeder? Spacecraft? No idea, but it looks like Apple designed it.
In addition to Cruise, Oblivion stars Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo. It’s set to open in IMAX on April 12, 2013, and will go into wide release a week later on April 19th. If the poster has gotten you intrigued, the first trailer will premiere this Sunday on iTunes.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.
Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.
Oblivion was shot in stunning digital 4K resolution on location across the United States and Iceland.
