South by Southwest is in full swing in Austin, Texas, and movie studios are out in force to promote their upcoming films. One movie with a discernable presence is director Joseph Kosinski’s follow-up to Tron: Legacy, the science fiction adventure Oblivion. The Tom Cruise vehicle opens wide in regular and IMAX theaters on April 19th, and some of the futuristic craft and costumes are on public display in Austin.

We’ve seen these flying, bubble-shaped aircraft all dolled up with professional lighting and special effects, but even sitting out in the bright sun, with nary a green screen to be found, they still look pretty damn good. They look sleek and simple, especially that glimpse of the controls that are nothing more than a series of blank, unremarkable knobs and switches. For all intents and purposes, that could be the center console of a new model hybrid car.

Oblivion is set in a future where Earth has been decimated in a war with a hostile alien force called Scavs. Tom Cruise plays Jack Harper, a drone repairman tasked with retrieving vital resources before abandoning the planet like the rest of the species. Jack, however, is a big fan of life on Earth, and when a mysterious, beautiful stranger crashes to the ground, it falls to him to ensure the future of humanity.

Oblivion stars Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo.
