After working on it for more than four years, a group of hardcore Battlestar Galactica fans have finally finished their labor of love, a BSG game called Diaspora: Shattered Armistice. The Diaspora Development team is made up of likeminded enthusiasts that shared the singular desire to play a videogame that lets them pilot a Viper. The finished product is now good to go and available for download. Did I mention that it is completely free?

Check out this release trailer, it should give you a good idea of what game play looks like. When you’re done with that, hit this link for system requirements, downloads, and all the important technical information.

Shattered Armistice allows players to fly both styles of Vipers, Raptors, a Cylon Raider, Blackbird, and other ships from the BSG universe. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to command Galactica herself. That would be pretty great. You can play alone, or with groups online—with or against.

The game features a number of preprogrammed missions for players to complete, but one of the coolest features that it includes all the tools you’ll need to create your own operations. You’ll be able to set courses for yourself and your friends, as well as play those manufactured by other players. Shattered Armistice could become a continually evolving entity, and depending on how many people take the initiative, there could be an almost endless supply of new tasks.

And the best part is you get to blast Toasters out of the sky.
