Nathan FillionMoving on from the prospect of a truly mortifying cameo—Tom Cruise in Star Wars: Episode VII—we shift our focus to one that we’re totally psyched about: Nathan Fillion appearing in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. We may now know where Fillion will pop up, and what character he may play in the deep space adventure, and if it turns out to be true, it might be the funniest, but most fitting place he could possibly turn up.

If you don’t want to know who Fillion might play, stop reading now. It should be readily apparent, but there are potential SPOILERS beyond this point.

Just the other day, James Gunn put the kibosh on the rumor that Fillion, who has worked with the director multiple times in the past, plays Nova, also known as Richard Rider, who apparently does have a small role in the film. Though he ruined that bit of hearsay, Gunn did go on the confirm that Fillion “has a small fun cameo he did as a favor to me.”

According to Schmoes Know, who claim to have a source close to the production, “Nathan Fillion will be voicing the part of Cosmo, the psychic Russian cosmonaut dog that has appeared in the Guardians of the Galaxy comics.”

CosmoHow absolutely perfect is that? That just signifies everything that we hope Guardians of the Galaxy will be, and everything that it looks like it will be. Having a geek favorite like Fillion lend a voice to an animated dog is better than anything we could have hoped for. This is a nod to the comics, as well as a nod to Fillion fans, but it is also fits right into a sarcastic world where you have an anthropomorphic raccoon and an eight-foot-tall alien tree. Considering the company, a telepathic dog won’t be out of place at all. You have to love that this was and option, and that Fillion said yes.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Cosmo is a former Russian test dog. Launched into space in the 1960s as part of a Soviet Space Program experiment, he accidentally drifted off, and eventually arrived in Knowhere, a scientific station built inside severed head of Celestial. Though Fillion won’t play Nova, that character does share a connection with Cosmo, so the two are not entirely unrelated. This is definitely small, but certainly a fun role for Fillion to get into. Cosmo has a long history with the Guardians, and has participated in many of their adventures.

Guardians of the Galaxy also stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Glenn Close, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Lee Pace, John C. Reilly, and many more, and opens everywhere August 1.
