Michael Giacchino To Score Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

With director Matt Reeves commanding the production of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the sequel has the potential to be a better movie than the first, which was a surprise hit in the summer of 2011. Now film composer Michael Giacchino has signed on to score Dawn, which Giacchino announced via Twitter.

Giacchino is probably best known for his collaborations with J.J. Abrams, but he also regularly works with Matt Reeves. Giacchino scored Reeves’ last two films, Let Me In and Cloverfield, so it makes sense that he’d score Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as well.
Michael Giacchino’s work can currently be heard in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness. The 45-year-old film composer won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for Pixar’s Up in 2010. Giacchino will be very busy in the upcoming year: in addition to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes he will also score The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending and Disney’s Tomorrowland for screenwriter Damon Lindelof and director Brad Bird.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes place 10 years after the events of the previous film, and will follow two intersecting storylines: one involving a small group of human survivors trying to re-establish their dominance as a species, and the other involving Caesar trying to maintain leadership among the growing population of evolving, self-aware apes. The sequel will feature actors Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Judy Greer as Caesar’s ape love interest, Cornelia.
