There were plenty of moments from Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary special that could have made this list — hell, we already made that list — but the biggest one has to be this beautiful bit of fan service. Having wrapped up an adventure that changed the course of his life forever, alongside two earlier incarnations of himself, the time lord takes a quiet moment to consider an eventual retirement, a time when he can step away from saving the world and be someone other than “the Doctor.” It would be a sweet moment even if that’s all there was to it, but it soared to the next level with seven words: “You know I really think you might.”

Fans had been speculating for months how “The Day of the Doctor” might honor its long legacy by somehow involving the older actors who played the role over the years. After all, a lot of time had passed since their tenures, certainly more than could be ignored if you just popped them back into their old outfits. Instead showrunner Steven Moffat chose one elder Doctor to represent them all, and made his age not a problem, but a plot point. The meeting between the Doctor and the Curator is delightful thanks to the performances of Tom Baker and Matt Smith, but it also teases an eventual ending for the Doctor’s travels, a time when he might settle down, get a cushy job, and revisit “a few of the old favorites.” – David
