Does Mark Hamill Know Any More About Episode VII Than You?

The announcement of Star Wars Episode VII (as well as VIII and IX, and possibly spinoffs) will probably go down as the biggest bit of movie news of 2012. Now pretty much anyone who had anything to do with the original trilogy is having to field questions about what they do and do not know about the new films. People haven’t wanted to talk to Mark Hamill this much in years.

Mark Hamill is open to reprising his role as Luke Skywalker

While nothing is known about the story, Hamill is open to the reprising his iconic role as Luke Skywalker, should the situation warrant it. Talking to E!, the 61-year-old actor said that he, and co-star Carrie Fisher, “have questions about it…And really, they’re not even at the stage where they’re able to answer those questions because, as far as I know, is there a story yet?”

It sounds like he’s in a similar position to most of the fans of the franchise. He’s a bit more in the know than us, but even he hasn’t been told much. Continuing, Hamill said, “Until I know more about what they have in mind, I think it’s better to let Lucasfilm make the announcements.”

That’s the rational approach, of course, but it’s so much more fun to speculate wildly based on impromptu, off-hand comments.

Hamill also kicked around the idea of who he would like to play Luke, should the story wind up involving a younger or older version of the character. “If they were going to do a story where Luke was too young or too old for me to play, they would get an age-appropriate actor…There’s so many good people.”

How would you react to that, to seeing someone that isn’t Mark Hamill onscreen being called Luke Skywalker? That’d just feel so wrong.
