y: The Last ManBrian K. Vaughn’s Y: The Last Man is one of the best comic book series of the last decade. The series is rich, complex, and deep, which makes it perfect to be the next big comic book movie. Y: The Last Man works for anyone who enjoys great storytelling. The Totally Rad Show’s Dan Trachtenberg will direct the much-anticipated film, but the only question is when will the movie be released in theaters.

According to the film’s producer David S. Goyer, the Y: The Last Man movie might go into production sooner than expected. He told CraveOnline, “We’ve got a script that’s as close as it’s ever been. That could go into production next year…. The first movie is meant to function as a standalone, but hopefully continue. Hopefully there will be others.”

I don’t see how Y: The Last Man can be made as one standalone movie. The story has so many twists and turns that it would be virtually impossible to re-create in one movie. Truthfully, Y: The Last Man would work better as a mini-series or a TV show on HBO or Showtime because the comic series is so episodic by nature.

Y: The Last Man finished its comic book run in 2008, but there has been a feature film in development since 2007 with director D.J. Caruso and his Disturiba screenwriter Carl Ellsworth attached to make the movie. There were even rumors that either Shia LaBeouf or Zachary Levi would play the film’s lead, Yorick Brown, an amateur escape artist and the last living male human in a world populated by females. D.J. Caruso dropped off the project and now director Dan Trachtenberg will make Y: The Last Man his feature film directorial debut.

It’s good to see the Y: The Last Man live-action adaptation getting some momentum, but there’s still no way of knowing when it will arrive in theaters. Perhaps it will join the long list of science fiction movies coming out in 2015, such as Star Wars: Episode VII, The Avengers 2, and Avatar 2.
