Live Action Star Blazers Trailer Will Blow Your Mind

Space Battleship Yamato is easily one of the most beloved sci-fi anime series of all time. It was released in America as Space Cruiser Yamato or as a dubbed, heavily edited version called Star Blazers which aired in the early 80s. It told the story of mankind’s last hope, a massive battleship called Yamato, constructed to save Earth from an attacking alien race called the Gamilas.

Now it’s being turned into a live action film by Japanese director Takashi Yamazaki and while he only spent the equivalent of $22.5 million on it, a relatively miniscule budget by Hollywood, sci-fi blockbuster standards, it looks brilliant.

The movie’s first trailer has arrived and though it’s entirely in Japanese and without subtitles, simply on a visual level it’s kind of stunning. The trailer is packed with wall to wall space combat in which gigantic fleets of pretty incredible looking starships collide, explode, and die in the cold, dark of space. This seems like a movie which deserves to make the trip to American theaters. If it ever makes it out of Japan, I’ll be first in line to buy a ticket. Watch:
