twin peaksThis isn’t totally unexpected news, but we’re glad to hear that one of our favorite actors is returning to one of our favorite shows to play one of our favorite characters. Twin Peaks wouldn’t be Twin Peaks without the inherent strangeness of David Lynch, but it also wouldn’t be the same without Special Agent Dale Cooper. It’s now being reported that Kyle MacLachlan will return to the series, and character, when it gets a new lease on life on Showtime next year. And he might not be the only one coming back. Twin Peaks may not be sci-fi, but it’s weird as shit, and we love it to death.

According to Deadline, MacLachlan has finalized a deal that will see him revisit what is perhaps his most famous, or at least most memorable role. He was expected to return—it would be hard to have the show without him and his “damn fine cup of coffee,” and he even made noise about it last October—but it is nice to know that he’s back in the fold and we can scratch that one worry off the list. The Dune star said, “I’m very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of Twin Peaks. May the forest be with you.”

This new season, a limited, nine-episode affair, isn’t a reboot or a redo either, it’s a straight up sequel, set in the modern day, and revisits the titular town where outlandish and unusual occurrences are the norm. Set to debut in 2016, marking the 25th anniversary of the cancellation, the action picks up 25 years later, with the community still dealing with the shocking death that originally kicked off the action. Lynch is going to co-write all nine episodes with co-producer Mark Frost, and he also plans to direct the entire run in 2015, which is nice for fans to hear.

Here’s the creepy teaser Showtime used to make the announcement back in October. While it doesn’t tell you anything, it certainly embodies the unnerving tension and weirdness we all expect from Twin Peaks.

Though MacLachlan is set to return, many have wondered who else from the original cast of unusual characters is going to join him. According to one rumor going around, Sherilyn Fenn and Sheryl Lee might also mount a comeback. If that gives you pause, you’re not alone, especially since their characters—Audrey Horne, Laura Palmer, and Maddy Ferguson (the last two are both Lee)—are all presumably dead. Maybe.

Audrey was assumed to have been killed in the explosion at the bank, though Fenn has said that if there had been a third season, she would have survived. So that could happen. They could also show up as different characters, perhaps family members, or in flashbacks and what not. Right now this is only a rumor, but we are talking about David Lynch here, so just about anything is possible.
