Karl Urban Pulls A Fast One On Star Trek Fans

There was a big hullabaloo at Comic-Con this week when Star Trek and Dredd star Karl Urban declared he would unveil some footage from the still-untitled Star Trek sequel. Urban had already stirred things up by maybe, quite possibly revealing the super-secret villain in the film. Right now all we know for sure about the bad guy is that Benedict Cumberbatch plays him. Many folks suspect a ruse on Urban’s part.

Star Trek writer Damon Lindelof went on record saying he had no idea what footage Urban was talking about. For days there was a great deal of back and forth about whether or not Urban was full of it, or if he was really going to let something slip from the ultra-high-security production. Urban did, in fact, release a video, and here it is. Be warned, however: it probably isn’t what you expect. Make sure to watch all the way to the end.

This stunt is bound to piss some people off, but I have to admit that I think it’s pretty funny. While I have no particular interest in watching Urban surf, this is at least a mildly amusing prank, needling at those of us who take things way too seriously from time to time. Sure, we hang on every last bit of news and information from the movies we anticipate and love, but it’s nice to see someone out to have a good time.

What do you think, what’s your take on this? Do you think this is a dick move by Urban, getting people excited only to spit in their face? Is he a bored celebrity picking on fanboys? Or was this just a good-natured prank?

Unless they resume making movies with Shatner or Patrick Steward and gang the Star Trek franchise is dead to me. I watched their previous “prequel” and won’t be watching another

I thought it was pretty fun. That’s what the new Star Trek is, it’s like Star Trek but not just for nerds.

I think it’s pretty funny. Plus, now I know what it’s like to go surfing and can cross that off my bucket list.

It was great to see that the new guys have the same sense of humor that distinguished the best of the earlier incarnations of the franchise. Bravo, Karl!

Brilliant! SF and Fantasy addicts (myself included) do tend to
take things too seriously. “Sneak Peeks”, advance trailers, stills
from the set – before the advent of ‘THE INTERNET’ (cue ominous music by John
Williams) movie fans always had to ‘wait’… savor the anticipation of what was
to come. As the world around us speeds up, we should slow down and enjoy what
there is around us. Hollywood has lost the whole concept of ‘anticipatory
pleasure’ – hell, it is something that has been lost to anyone born after 1980.
Truly sad. Thank you, Karl. Fun – a good ‘poke in the eye’ – nice surfing – and
a good laugh. At least SOMEONE still involved in the ‘Hollywood Machine’ can
have a sense of humor. (PS – note to Hollywood: Cease and desist with the
perpetual remakes! In the words of ‘Ripley’ – “Did IQs just drop sharply
    while I was away?” The writing of ‘original’ scripts has not disappeared;
‘creativity’ has not been lost to the human race – only to Hollywood Execs.
Please – stop holding the fans, the movie enthusiasts, and the ‘general public’
hostage to your demands for more money. Start looking to the authors of modern
fiction and you will see that ‘new’ ideas still exist – then pay them for their
work and adapt it to the ‘big screen’. Support writers with ORIGINAL ideas and
stop pouring money down the throats of hacks.)

Good natured prank. Geez, lighten the F up “Brent Mcknight”

It was a good natured prank, perhaps not the best thought out one, but a good-natured (and moderately funny) prank.
