Jurassic WorldJust to get this out of the way up front, we may stray into spoiler territory where Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World is concerned. We’re not really going to talk about anything that’s not in the trailers and every plot synopsis, but if you’re sensitive to this sort of thing, you may want to sit this one out.

For a while when Jurassic World was filming, there was a big problem with security and key plot details kept leaking out. One of the biggest, which has since been corroborated by the filmmakers and included in plot descriptions and the trailer, is that there is a new, manmade dinosaur. The story, as we understand it currently, is that 20-plus years after the first film, the park is now open and in order to boost attendance the corporate higher ups that run the show commission a new species made by combining T-rex, Velociraptor, snake, and cuttlefish DNA. It, of course, escapes and goes nuts. So far we’ve been calling it D-rex, short for Diabolus rex, which is cringe worthy, but this new big bad may be getting a name change.

Seriously though, name a new creation something sinister and ominous like Diabolus rex, it’s going to try to kill everyone. Try naming it something like Mr. Snuggles, at least then if it goes on a kill-crazy rampage characters will have to yell things like, “No, no, Mr. Snuggles, please don’t rip out my intestines,” and that’s funny for a while.

We’ve only seen glimpses of the new beastie in the trailer, though we get a clear idea of what it’s capable physically as we learn that it climbed out of a 40-foot-tall enclosure. And now we may be calling it Indominus rex. That’s not great, but it’s better than Diabolus rex, and certainly far less on the nose.

As with so many so many reveals these days, this comes from Jurassic World toys and appears on this document that lists upcoming product tie ins:

Jurassic WorldWho knows if this will actually appear in the movie. It’s better than D-rex, but it’s hard to imagine someone saying I-rex, and the full name is cumbersome and weird. At this stage who the hell knows? And it doesn’t really matter what you call it as long as it gets out and wreaks havoc.

I’m also curious to see what “Hero Mashers Dino” and “Hero Mashers Hybrid Dinos” are. Are there more hybrids that just the one that we don’t know about? A while back, Vincent D’Onofrio, who reportedly plays the villain, said that even with all the leaks, we don’t’ really know the full story, so it’s possible. I do definitely hope there are still surprises, as much as we talk about all the leaks and reports, it’s nice to go in not knowing every last detail.

Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy, Irrfan Khan, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, Judy Greer, BD Wong, and more, and opens June 12.
