Jurassic Park Back In Theaters For 3D Re-Release

Jurassic Park will become the next iconic movie to be re-released in theaters as part of a 3D cash-in. Universal Pictures has confirmed that they’re converting Steven Spielberg’s epic dino movie into the pay higher ticket prices and wear funny glasses format.

Expect Jurassic Park 3D in theaters some time during July of 2013. As one of the first ever movies to use realistic computer effects it’s probably better suited than a lot of older films. CGI generally looks better in 3D than real objects or models (which Jurassic Park also used extensively).

The real question here is, will it be worth the effort? When George Lucas rolled out Phantom Menace for a 3D re-release a few weeks ago almost no one even noticed. The film slipped in and out of the box office with barely a whisper. On the other hand the recent 3D re-release of The Lion King was a smash box office success.

Which will Jurassic Par be? Do you want to see Spielberg’s dinosaurs in 3D?

Something I wrote last month concerning this:

Why don’t dinosaurs in movies have private parts? I’m not being perverted here. It’s a perfectly legitimate question. The dinosaurs in Jurassic Park (or any other pre-historic related movie) don’t have any junk. You never see so much as a glimpse of any dino wiener, vag or anus. I mean shouldn’t they be as accurately made as possible to capture the feeling of realism? I think next year for the 20th anniversary of Jurassic Park the film should be re-mastered to fix this error. They could easily do this these days using CGI. Imagine watching the newly re-mastered film next year at the theatre in 3D! Just think of how much more terrifying and thrilling it’d be watching the scene where the T-Rex is chasing the Jeep. His big fat dino schlong would be swinging back and forth as he chased them down the road. Then Jeff Goldblum would be like, “Must cum faster! Must cum faster!” Just think about how big dinosaurs are. I mean they were HUGE. Imagine how big a brontosauruses vagina would be! If one died you could take shelter in their vagina. Who needs caves when you got a nice big warm dino vag to live in?

Speaking as a true die-hard Jurassic Park fan:

This announcement is very bittersweet for me.  I always looked at this film as a piece of
groundbreaking cinema.  It is a true
masterpiece which helped sculpt a generation in the early 90’s.  Seeing the title re-released in 3-D diminishes
the respect that film holds.  You wouldn’t
see them re-releasing Jaws, Back to the Future, or E.T. in 3-D would you?  The film didn’t need gimmicky 3-D back in the
90’s, it shouldn’t need it now.

On the flip side, I am happy to see the franchise as a whole
start getting attention again.  I hope
that the re-release will beckon new parents to take their kids to the theaters
to watch one of Spielberg’s greatest movies, capturing the imagination of yet another
    generation.  I think that a digital re-mastering
of the film would have been better suited, instead of needing the 3-D part.  Perhaps this re-release (if it goes well), may
seriously raise the idea of creating better sequels.  Perhaps we can see another summer of dinosaur
merchandising and TV specials, similar to the summer of ’93.  I still have a couple of my souvenir
collector cups from the McDonald’s promotions.

In either case, I don’t think that a re-release will do as badly
as Phantom Menace.  For instance, Phantom
Menace was an awful movie the first time around. Did they really think it would
have people lining up down the block to see it?
Jurassic Park does circles around Phantom Menace in every way, shape,
and form.  It is simply a superior
    movie.

Despite my qualms with the re-release, I will still go see it.

Re-releasing a movie in 3D has no effect on the original film. If one doesn’t wan’t to see the new version, don’t buy a ticket. Having a 3D version is just another viewing option and chance to see the movie on the big screen. Titanic 3D was an amazing experience and seeing it on the big screen again was a fantastic opportunity. I think JP would be about the same. I eagerly look forward to it.
