Jurassic Park 3D Getting One-Week IMAX Engagement

In the years since Avatar earned all the money on the planet, 3D has been big business for Hollywood. It’s rare to find a new mega-budget project that doesn’t come out in 3D, and even many films not originally shot in the format are getting a third dimension via post-conversion. Not surprising, since IMAX means higher ticket prices. That scent of money means even older films are fair game for a 3D makeover. In the case of many movies, I’d consider that a transparent cash grab. But the prospect of seeing Jurassic Park in both 3D and IMAX…that might seduce me out of my ticket price.
We knew that Jurassic Park was getting a post-converted 3D release in theaters this spring, but now they’re taking things to the next level by adding a brief 3D IMAX run as well. Jurassic Park 3D was already set for release on April 5, 2013, and now Universal has announced that it will play for one week, from the 5th through the 12th.
In a press release, Universal president of distribution Nikki Rocco said:
Jurassic Park was groundbreaking when it was originally released, and The IMAX 3D Experience will allow today’s audiences to become fully immersed in one of the most breathtaking epics Universal has ever released.
My apathy towards 3D aside, I have to admit that — if done right — a 3D IMAX version of Jurassic Park could be spectacular. It might even be enough to convince me to spend a couple of hours wearing those stupid glasses on top of my normal glasses. Hopefully they won’t half-ass this thing. If nothing else, the scene of the Tyrannosaurus chasing the jeep should be quite a sight…
