Jupiter Ascending Gets A Prime Summer Release Date
Andy and Lana Wachowski’s latest science fiction epic received some good news today. In the wake of the commercial failure that was their last film, Cloud Atlas, Warner Bros. has positioned the Matrix directors’ next project, Jupiter Ascending, in a prime summer blockbuster spot. The studio announced today that the film is scheduled for release on July 25, 2014.
According to Deadline, this puts Jupiter Ascending in direct competition with the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson/Brett Ratner joint, Hercules. That bodes well for the film, indicating that Warner has faith that it can stand up to healthy summertime competition. But not too stiff, because there’s no way that Hercules won’t suck. And hell, the Wachowskis could use a win.
Whether you think it was a failure or a success—or both, to be honest—Cloud Atlas gets points for pure ambition. From what we know about the film, Jupiter Ascending is going to follow a similarly grand path. After all, the story centers around the queen of the universe.
Humans are apparently very low on the ladder as far as evolution is concerned, though that doesn’t stop higher beings on other worlds from watching us like we’re a particularly trashy reality TV show. The queen of the universe targets an Earth woman (Mila Kunis) for termination because the two possess an identical genetic makeup, which makes her a potential threat.
Jupiter Ascending also stars Channing Tatum, Eddie Redmayne, Sean Bean, Douglas Booth, and Tuppence Middleton. I wonder how Sean Bean is going to die in this movie. Given the scope of the film, it better be pretty awesome.
