Could Joss Whedon Make A Serenity Sequel After He Finishes Avengers 2?

The biggest movie of 2012 was undoubtedly Marvel’s The Avengers. The success of this film catapulted director Joss Whedon into mainstream stardom, which is pretty impressive for being only his feature directing gig. His film debut was, of course, Serenity, the film adaptation of his TV series Firefly. Fans of the series were waiting for Whedon to reunite the Serenity cast and make a sequel film, but Serenity didn’t do well enough with general audiences to warrant it.

In an interview with The Toronto Star, however, Joss Whedon teases the possibility of making Serenity 2 after The Avengers 2 is finished and released into theaters:

“I’ll never really accept it,” Whedon said of the end of the Firefly saga. “And I always, in the back of my head, think, ‘What if I could get the old gang back together?’

“Part of me is like, ‘God, it would be great when I finish Avengers 2 to do that,'” he continued, before downplaying the likelihood of that ever happening. “I suspect very strongly that after Avengers 2 the next thing I do will be a one-man show,” he joked. “Possibly one monkey.”

Thanks to the success of The Avengers, Serenity 2 seems more likely than it has in years…but that still doesn’t mean it’s that likely. After all, Whedon also has that S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series on his docket.

Still, you never know. A few months ago, Whedon and Firefly lead Nathan Fillion teased the idea of producing a new Firefly animated series. Whedon will also be writing a new comic book series for Dark Horse Comics. As for Whedon’s thought’s on making the Serenity movie:

“When I made [the movie], I said here’s one thing I’ll never do again — a movie based on something that some people know about and some people don’t, with tons of characters who all know each other and who you have to introduce. … And then my second movie was The Avengers.”

If Joss Whedon decides to make a sequel film to Serenity after making The Avengers 2, the earliest it could arrive in theaters would be sometime in 2017. That would be 12 years after the original Serenity film was released in 2005, which is a long time between movies. Maybe we should all give up on the possibilities of a Serenity 2 and just enjoy what is available from the Firefly ‘verse now.

  1. Just because something is good, doesn’t mean you have to keep on making it forever. Unless you want it to turn into Coronation Street.

  2. I really would love more Serenity. That just means it’ll never happen.

  3. Nicki Dreyer says:

I totally agree with the last paragraph [Don’t mess with perfection and enjoy what we have] – I’d be happy if they just released some more comics – I loved Shepard’s Tale.

  4. I think they should do the animated series. allows them to build a story and an end

  5. Jeff Hanson says:

WTB firefly prequel that goes into the colonization of the system they live in

  7. As much as I like Firefly/Serenity, Wash is dead, and so is Book. It’s been too long. I’d like to see it, but it’s gonna be too different.

You’re probably right but the adventure can continue with the surviving characters. Just look at The walking Dead. Some main characters have been axed and the show just keeps getting better with the addition of new faces.

These subtle teases are the most strategic I’ve ever hear Joss Whedon think… I think he’s going to pull it off!

I just watched reruns of the Firefly series and then the Serenity movie. I would love to watch a sequel to the first movie. I think Joss Whedon should definitely make another Serenity movie. It is one of my very favorite movies. I watch it again and again. Please get the Serenity crew back together. Maybe Wash left behind a little Wash. Maybe they could all be forced back together to help one if the crew who is in danger. I don’t really care what the movie is about, I just want to see the crew of Serenity get back together. Please?

    • Dante says:

I have an idea the story will set 12 years after the movie maybe Mal was in prison for 10 years and the movie can start with someone getting him out a prison break and a new job for him he has to find his crew and this can be a new begining maybe a new tv show after this movie

  10. Patrick says:

I will never give up on it, you asshat.

  11. Carl says:

Give up on the Firefly ‘verse?!? The fuck is the matter with you!!!

    Joss Whedon… come on man!

  12. Rob says:

I could see Whedon taking all the released episodes and spread them over movies to really flesh out the characters. Would love, more than anything else, for the TV series to return.
As far as, the comments on the age of the actors, have you looked at the current capabilities of make up and special effects in Hollywood nowadays?
(Back to beginning rant) Just an idea, the first prequel could be called Before Serenity. Following Zoey and Mal through their times in the war, showcasing the many tales they spun about it.
Done with my rant on one of the greatest stories shown on TV.

  13. Firefly is the best show says:

We want more movies and tv episodes

If there is one hope we have in our back pocket it is that Hollywood will reboot it at some point if Joss keeps dragging his feet. It may be ten years from now and we may get cameos by Fillion and some of the others but the roles most likely will be given to newer faces. I have heard Joss tease “getting the gang back together” before but the sad reality is that most of the actors have moved on to other bigger things although they all have gone on record about the fondness they have for the series. It is a longshot, at best, that the original cast sans Wash and Book of course will reunite again. (I would prefer two more movies so there would be , at least, a trilogy)…..but like most of the nerdverse I hold out hope.
