A few years ago, two Star Wars fans made a short film featuring an epic lightsaber battle. “RvD2: Ryan vs. Dorkman 2” spread across the Internet like wildfire. The pair was even featured in the music video “Pork and Beans” for the rock band Weezer. Now director Joe Carnahan is endorsing these fan filmmakers to possibly direct Star Wars: Episode VII for Disney. Read his glowing tweet and watch the fan-made short film below.

In a series of tweets, Joe Carnahan praised the directing duo of Ryan Wieber & Michael “Dorkman” Scott for creating an emotional, well-choreographed lightsaber battle sequence. He compared watching the short film to watching Star Wars for the first time. He later tweeted that it was the best lightsaber sequence since The Empire Strikes Back. Now that’s a ringing endorsement!

While Wieber & Scott probably don’t have a realistic chance getting the Star Wars job, their short film is pretty well made considering its low budget. Since its release in 2008, the short film has gained more than a million views on YouTube alone, and was one of the most well-known viral videos in the late 2000s.

His endorsement is great, but this begs the question: why not hire Carnahan to direct Star Wars: Episode VII? He did a killer job with The Grey early last year. He also knows his way around making movies like Star Wars work for general audiences and fans. A few months ago, he released a sizzle reel revealing his pitch for a science fiction movie called Gemini Man. Disney ultimately rejected the pitch, but the sizzle reel displayed Carnahan’s inventiveness with the genre.
