Last month, Marvel cast Parks and Recreation actor Chris Pratt in the lead role of Guardians of the Galaxy. Many people felt this was a strange choice, because when you think of Chris Pratt, you don’t necessarily think of a superhero. Before Pratt was cast as Star-Lord, Marvel auditioned practically every male actor in his late 20s and early 30s in Hollywood, including Lee Pace, Joel Edgerton, and Jim Sturgess. He has since opened up about the auditioning process and let fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy know what to expect when August 2014 rolls around. Amongst other things, the British actor says that Guardians will be more like Star Wars than Spider-Man.

Sturgess says the new movie will be Marvel’s spin on the space opera. Sturgess reveals:

You don’t actually get to know that much about the project. It’s all under lock and key which is crazy but obviously, it’s based on a comic. What I realized is it’s not rooted in reality. It’s up in space and the character was a space pirate of some sort so it was much more in the vein of Han Solo rather than just dressing up in a tight fitting suit.

While Jim Sturgess would’ve done a fine job with Star-Lord, it will be interesting to see if Chris Pratt is perfect for the role as the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The Guardians movie also recently cast WWE wrestler Dave Bautista in the role of Drax the Destroyer.

The superhero space opera genre didn’t work out so well for Warner Bros. when they released Green Lantern back in 2011. Marvel may have a tough road ahead of them if they want Guardians of the Galaxy to be a success like The Avengers or Iron Man.

Guardians of the Galaxy will open in theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014, in 3D.
