A few months ago, Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler were at the center of Guardians of the Galaxy casting rumors. It was reported that they would play either the expert marksman and master tactician Rocket Raccoon, and/or the treelike alien Groot. It seemed strange that Carrey or Sandler would be considered for a movie like Guardians of the Galaxy at the time, and sure enough, it looks like those reports were false.

On the red carpet for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone premiere during South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, Jim Carrey denied any involvement in Marvel’s space-hopping superhero flick. When asked point blank by GeekscapeDotNet, Carrey replied, “Never heard of it.” Watch the video below:

There you have it: Jim Carrey has nothing to do with Guardians of the Galaxy. Honestly, Jim Carrey would be a bad choice for Rocket Raccoon, but he could possibly do a better job with Groot. Rocket Raccoon’s comedy comes from his matter-of-fact demeanor and personality. It also comes from the fact that he’s a raccoon-alien who is absolutely amazing with big, gigantic guns. Groot, on the other hand, is slow but brilliant, so Jim Carrey doing some sort of motion capture performance could potentially be exciting and impressive. To get a better idea of Rocket Raccoon, check out this video clip from the Marvel animated series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes:

As of this post, there is only one member of the Guardians of the Galaxy who has been cast. Chris Pratt (Zero Dark Thirty) will play the Guardians’ leader, Star-Lord/Peter Quill. There are still four more members to be cast: Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, and the aforementioned Rocket Raccoon and Groot.

Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014, in 3D.
