It’s official! Actress Jena Malone has been offered to play the role of Johanna Mason for the upcoming Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire.

THR’s Heat Vision blog is confirming Jena Malone has been offered the role as tribute for the sequel and would be offered to reprise that role for Mockingjay, the third film in the Hunger Games series. Malone would be joining Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in the sequel, which will start shooting in North Carolina in September.

During the past two weeks, there have been all sorts of rumors about who will play this pivotal role. There were reports that actress “>Mia Wasikowska was in the running but those reports were later debunked. Mia Wasikowska wasn’t even in talks with director Francis Lawrence or Lionsgate. There were also reports that model Zoe Aggeliki was in talks with Lionsgate for this femme fatale role but as it turns out Aggeliki will not be playing Johanna Mason.

The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins’ describes the character of Johanna Mason of having “a wicked ability to murder.” She is a tribute from district 7 and is known for pretending to be a weaker tribute during the games then methodically picking off the others one by one. She is quite the interesting foil to Katniss Everdeen.

Jena Malone is perfect for this role. Given who the character of Johanna Mason is and the physicality, range and sharp wit of Malone and considering her part as Rocket in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch then it seems like a fitting choice.
