As production begins on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s good to see director James Gunn is taking a well-mannered approach to the cosmic superhero team-up movie. He’s considering the source material, but he’s also infusing his own style and humor in the movie. Recently, James Gunn met up with comic book writer Dan Abnett, and artist and inker Andy Lanning, at the U.K. Marvel production offices in London, England.

According to ComicBookMovie, Abnett and Lanning were responsible for the Guardians of the Galaxy reboot series back in 2008. Their Guardians of the Galaxy team were the second iteration of the cosmic peacekeeping squad; the first was from the original 1969 series by writer Arnold Drake and artist Gene Colan. The 2014 feature film that James Gunn will be writing and directing will play heavily on Abnett and Lanning’s work, so it makes sense for Gunn to be conferring with the creative types behind Guardians of the Galaxy‘s recent comic adventures.

James Gunn later tweeted (and posted on instagram) about the experience meeting Abnett and Lanning. He gave them a tour of the production office and showed them what his team had been working on for the upcoming movie. The Guardians of the Galaxy comic book rebooters also assured fans that the film is in good hands. Read their tweets below:

Casting for Guardians of the Galaxy is ramping up with the addition of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and possibly Jason Momoa as Drax the Destroyer. This only leaves Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and the treelike alien Groot to be cast for the movie. These roles will likely be filled soon, as Guardians of the Galaxy goes into principal photography this summer.

Guardians of the Galaxy will open in theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014, in 3D.
