James Gunn Confirms A Nathan Fillion Cameo In Guardians Of The Galaxy

Nathan Fillion makes everything better. That’s just a scientifically proven fact, and I imagine many Browncoats out there will agree with me. Even in small roles, like Dogberry in Joss Whedon’s adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing, he’s fun and engaging and, most importantly, memorable. And he’s about to bring this ability to elevate everything around him to a movie that we’re already stupidly excited for, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
There have already been rumors that Fillion could appear in the cosmic adventure. After all, he has worked with director James Gunn multiple times in the past, starring in Slither, appearing in Super, and even participating in the PG Porn series. Gunn took to everyone’s favorite short-form social media platform to confirm that his friend does indeed have a cameo, and just a cameo, in the film.
Some have speculated that Fillion could have a sizeable part in Guardians, but Gunn shot those rumors down cold:

A short time later, however, he did unleash a tweet that is sure to make Firefly fans all over the world squeal with delight:
“@STARS_TyranT: Are the rumours true that he has some part in the film?” @nathanfillion has a very small fun cameo he did as a favor to me.

So Fillion is not, as some supposed, playing Nova, also known as Richard Rider, who does reportedly have a small part in the film. People have even speculated that he could pop up at Mal Reynolds, his Fireflycharacter, because of Whedon’s involvement with the Marvel universe. As much fun as that could be, it’s also completely insane. Fillion himself has also teased that he could appear in a post-credits scene. No matter what, we’ll have to wait to see for ourselves, and isn’t that the best way?
For those of you not in the loop, Guardians of the Galaxy tells the story of a mismatched group of deep space outlaws who have to come together in order to save the lives of 12 billion people. Led by Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), a thief with delusions of grandeur, the team includes Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a green-skinned assassin; Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), a hulking beast of a madman whose blue skin is covered with bright red tattoos; an anthropomorphic alien raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper) with a fondness for heavy weapons; and Rocket’s partner in crime, the eight-foot-tall alien tree Groot (Vin Diesel), who only ever says, “I am Groot.” Now just imagine Fillion thrown into that mix and think about how much fun that will be.
Guardians of the Galaxy opens everywhere on August 1.
