James Gunn Claims Guardians Of The Galaxy Is Not The Riskiest Marvel Movie

Aside from Transformers: Age of Extinction, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is easily my most anticipated movie of the summer of 2014. There’s a cool strangeness to the adaptation that we typically don’t get with most studio blockbusters. The movie seems like it’s going to deliver something you don’t necessarily expect from Marvel. According to director James Gunn, the superhero movie is about something more than high action.
In an interview with Total Film, Gunn says that Guardians is about love and togetherness more than a group of outlaws coming into their own as heroes. He claims that his cosmic superhero movie is about something bigger than delivering thrills and excitement, and that there is an emotional heart. Gunn explained:
For me this movie is about family…It’s about a bunch of people that don’t have a family and they learn to love each other. And I think it’s about giving a shit. I think we live in a world where we’re taught that not giving a shit is the coolest thing, and this is a movie that says it’s really OK to give a shit.
Many people feel that Guardians is the riskiest Marvel movie in its entire cinematic universe because it’s not based on a well-known property. In fact, most casual readers and Marvel fans aren’t really into the comic because it’s more obscure than the likes of Captain America, Thor, and X-Men. Gunn continued:
I don’t think it’s the riskiest Marvel property…I think Iron Man was by far the riskiest. It was a film company that didn’t have much, raising money to make a film based on a property that wasn’t that much more well known than Guardians of the Galaxy. So I think it’s not even close to the riskiest Marvel property.
Now that the film is in post-production, with Vin Diesel voicing the tree-like alien Groot and Bradley Cooper lending his voice and personality to Rocket Raccoon, Gunn feels that things are really coming together, and that the finish line is only a few more months away. “It’s wonderful because every take, Groot and Rocket are perfect in their performance! In my brain. So I think the difficulties for this come up later when we’re putting it all together, dealing with a bunch of FX artists who have to act,” Gunn said.
Meanwhile, Marvel is planning to release a prelude comic book featuring the backstory of the movie. While the Brian Michael Bendis’ reboot from 2008 serves as some of the film’s backbone, the new prequel will feature how some of the film’s villains. When he learns of the orb’s true power, he must rally his new team to save the galaxy from a mysterious new threat. The movie stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close.
Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters everywhere in 3D on August 1st.
