The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1 Trailer Never Wanted Any Of This

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy may be the highest grossing domestic movie of the 2014, topping the $300 million mark over the weekend, but most of us don’t really expect it to finish the year in that position. It’s possible that Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated Interstellar could knock it out of the top spot, and then there’s a little movie franchise called The Hunger Games that you may have heard of. The first part of the final chapter, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1, opens this November, and considering that the films have done little more than straight up print money for Lionsgate, most of us expect this installment to continue the trend. Cumbersome title and all, a new trailer for the film has just dropped into our laps.
It may be less than two minutes long, but this video is epic as all hell and might just send shivers down your spine. The last book in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy of young adult novels (which Hollywood, as is their thing now, split into two movies), Mockingjay is the weakest link, but from what we see here, the movie looks like it does a strong job of capturing the look and feel and scope of the events of the conclusion of the saga (or at least the first half of it).
Mockingjay provides a different perspective on the dystopian world of Panem. While the first two films and books revolve around the titular games, this one broadens your view of the world, diving head first into the burgeoning rebellion you’ve seen seething over the first two chapters. Here you get to see District 13, which most of the nation thinks was destroyed and which exists in secret. This is the seat of the revolution, and while President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the Capital uses a captive Peeta Melark (Josh Hutcherson) as a public pawn, the leader of District 13, President Coin (Julianne Moore), along with Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman), use heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in the same way.
As you can clearly see, they’re tooling up for war, stockpiling bombs and weapons, like that sweet explosive crossbow (Daryl from The Walking Dead would be salivating if he could see that).
Having survived two rounds of the Hunger Games, Katniss becomes the semi-willing face of the rebellion, though she has some demands, like rescuing Peeta. Though if she dies in the process, Coin and her cronies will get just as much mileage, maybe more, out of the young lovers storyline.
There appear to a ton of thrills, lots of tension, sprawling action, and high enough stakes, both personally as well as in a bigger picture sense, to keep us more than enthralled when The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1 begins its campaign of world domination on November 21. Part 2 is scheduled to hit one year later, on November 20, 2015. You can buy your tickets starting on October 29.
