The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Nominated For Seven MTV Movie Awards

Just because the Oscars have come and gone doesn’t mean that awards season is completely over. The 2014 MTV Movie Awards are just over the horizon this spring with Conan O’Brien hosting the ceremony. Since MTV caters to younger viewers, the movies nominated this year reflect the network’s key demographic. It’s not shocking to see, but The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has been nominated for seven Golden Popcorns, but there are also a number of other sci-fi films up for awards, too.
Catching Fire saw nominations for Best Female Performance for Jennifer Lawrence, Best Male Performance for Josh Hutcherson, Best Fight, Best Shirtless Performance for Sam Clafin, Best Villain for Donald Sutherland’s President Snow, Best On-Screen Transformation for Elizabeth Banks turning into Effie Trinket, and, of course, Movie of the Year. I’m actually surprised that the sequel didn’t get nominated for Best Kiss.
It’s also surprising to see that Lawrence wasn’t nominated for the Best Hero. While the category is mostly packed with male superheroes, a Hobbit (really?), and a would-be secret service agent, Katniss only exposed the hypocrisy of Hunger Games competition and the tyranny of a corrupt government, that’s all. It’s not like she destroyed a whole city and killed thousands of people like Henry Cavill’s Superman in Man of Steel, or unleashed a terrible and murderous dragon on a small unaware lakeside town like Martin Freeman’s Bilbo in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, or anything like that. She’s only the goddamn hero of her country.
Another shocker is not seeing Gravity nominated for anything more than Best Female Performance for Sandra Bullock, not even Movie of the Year. One of the highest grossing movies of the year, it received multiple nominations from other film organizations, so it’s a bit surprising that it almost got shut out here. 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Wolf of Wall Street round out the nominations for Movie of the Year. American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street are tied for the most nominations with eight apiece.
Other notable science fiction movies nominated for this year’s MTV Movie Awards are Danny McBride’s New Pet (Channing Tatum) in This is the End in the #WTF Moment category; Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness for Best Villain; and Backstreet Boys, Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen, and Craig Robinson Perform in Heaven as the Best Musical Moment in This is the End. This is the End also wrangled Best Cameo nomination for Rihanna, which is far from the best guest spot in that film.
The 2014 MTV Movie Awards premiere on April 13 on MTV, and then will be re-run continually for the next week and a half afterwards. Check out the complete list of nominations below:
