H.R. Giger’s Unearthed Alien Concept Art Is As Haunting As It Was 35 Years Ago

One of our all time favorite movies is celebrating a powerful milestone this year, as Ridley Scott’s classic sci-fi/horror hybrid Alien turns 35-years-old. Watching the film today it is every bit as powerful as the first time you saw it, and it has aged better than perhaps any genre movie ever made. It’s still terrifying, still wildly original, and even though it’s been ripped off countless times, it’s still as fresh as it was three-and-a-half decades ago. A big part of that is the creature and set design from noted Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger, and a new collection of concept art from the film has found its way out of the shadows and onto the internet for you to check out.
These images will be featured on cards that come along with the new 35th anniversary Blu-ray box set from 20th Century Fox, but you can get a sneak peek at them thanks to Yahoo. These paintings are replicas of the original designs that Giger gave to Scott. You not only see the intricate designs that the artist came up with for the sets, and the horrifying creations that would go on to haunt so many of our nightmares over the years, but the twisted eroticism and sexuality that Giger’s work is notorious for is also prominently displayed in these works.
It’s sad that, after all these years, one of the most horrifying Hollywood creature inventions has been retired, at least for Scott. He recently told fans not that, even though the films are set in the same universe, we shouldn’t be expecting any xenomorphs to appear in the Prometheus films. The director said, “The beast is done. Cooked. I got lucky meeting H.R. Giger all those years ago after four, I think it wears out a little bit. There’s only so much snarling you can do.”
You may have noticed, like we did when he originally made this statement, that Scott conveniently ignores the two Alien Vs. Predator movies, which is something most of us try to do on a regular basis. You have to wonder if the iconic creatures could pop up in another one of these movies, should such a thing ever happen. Both were terrible, not to mention box office flops, but when has that ever stopped Hollywood from rebooting, rehashing, or otherwise revisiting anything?
While you contemplate that potential nightmare scenario for a bit, you can kill some time by looking at these creepy ass images, which very realistically may give you honest-to-god bad dreams.
