In a few weeks, the newest TV series from creator Cameron Porsandeh and executive producer Ronald D. Moore will air on Syfy. Helix is one of the bright spots in science fiction in the New Year, so to get ready for the craziness the horror/sci-fi TV series is about to unleash, the cable network released new trailers and images for Helix‘s series premiere in January.

The first trailer is an overview of Helix. It features cast members talking about the series and what audiences should expect from the new TV show. While the concept might make you think the cast would only feature scientists, the trailer reveals a military aspect as well. It still looks like a mix between John Carpenter’s The Thing and Moore’s Battlestar Galactica reboot.

The next trailer features the mysterious virus at the center of Helix. From the trailer, it seems that the virus is continuously changing. Unlike in The Thing, you can clearly tell who the virus infects because, apparently, it makes you look like a super-strong, gooey zombie.

All sci-fi dramas need more conflict than just the “monster-of-the-week.” There has to be some bigger secret or mystery that brings audiences back week after week. On Helix, the mystery surrounds why these characters are at the remote research center, and discovering the origins of the virus. This third trailer really makes you feel that there is something more than meets the eye with Helix.

The last trailer focuses on Helix‘s characters. The actors in Helix are top notch and make a great ensemble cast, so it’s going to be interesting to see how these characters grow and evolve episode after episode.

Syfy also released new images from Helix‘s pilot episode. While the images look good, I can’t help but feel anxious for the show to premiere. So far, everything we’ve seen from Helix looks good, but will the pilot live up to the promise of Syfy’s promotional materials? It’s rare that I get caught up with trailers and promos, but Helix looks so damn good that I can’t wait to watch it.

Helix follows a group of CDC scientists stationed at a secret lab in a remote area of the Arctic. Assigned to investigate a possible global outbreak, they soon discover something terrifying beneath the icy surface. Helix stars Billy Campbell, who plays Dr. Alan Farragut, leader of the Center for Disease Control outbreak field team, as well as Kyra Zagorsky, Mark Ghanimé, Jordan Hayes, Meegwun Fairbrother, Catherine Lemieux, and Neil Napier. Jeri Ryan will also appear on the series, but as a reoccurring player, not a series regular.

Helix will debut on Friday, January 10, 2014 on Syfy at 10/9c in a two-hour premiere event.
