Heil Kortzfleisch! Iron Sky Producers Paying Back Film’s Crowd-Sourced Investors

There are so many good ideas out there. I don’t consider myself an expert on them or anything. It’s not like I have a bone-white business card to prove it. But I’m pretty sure adding “Nazi” in front of an idea usually takes it to a higher level. Nazi zombies? Dead Snow was better than your average undead flick. Nazi Indiana Jones movie? A lot of people call it the best of the franchise. Nazi Christoph Waltz? Führergeddaboudit! (waits for applause) But for some reason, the Nazi Alien flick Iron Sky just didn’t hit, much less resonate. But quality isn’t about reputation, and the film gets a good one for paying its dues.

Variety reports producer Blind Spot Pictures will begin paying back around “20% of the movie’s $10 million budget” to crowd-sourced investors. I put quotes on that so you’d know Variety isn’t interested in doing your math for you. The investors were a group of fans who were with the project from its earliest days on Wreckamovie, contributing brain ideas and monetary ideas, from $1,000 minimums to over $13,000 a donation. Wreckamovie was responsible for the Star Wreck parodies as well, if you remember.

Overseas box office, covering Europe, Australia, and the Far East, as well as DVD sales in the U.S. and U.K., have surpassed the $10 million budget. A group of 280 mostly Finnish and German generous folk are getting their investments back early next year. Every story I write about crowd-funded projects makes me feel better and better about the future availability of good ideas on a widespread basis. It just wasn’t happening here for everyone.

On a vaguely possible brighter note for comic fans, Blind Spot is the company set to adapt the gritty sci-fi graphic novel, Jeremiah Harm.
