One of my least favorite gender stereotypes involves the inane comparisons between dolls and action figures. You know what you do with a doll? You hug and love on a doll in between changing its fake diapers and cooing when it calls you Mommy, and that’s all fine and dandy. But with an action figure, you’re liable to save the fucking world. Or at least whatever tabletop or dirt mound is subbing in for the world at that moment. So it had better look the part.

Hasbro has unveiled its new “Black Series” line of Star Wars action figures, and they look more pristine than an old cable version of the original trilogy. The figurines will be six inches tall, standing a few heads above the 3 3/4-inch figures that have been lining shelves for years. The detail and articulation have never been this good.

“We consider them the best figures that Hasbro’s ever produced for Star Wars that meets the sensibilities of romancing the character as well as the playability and poseability that fans really appreciate,” said Derryl DePriest, Vice President of Boys Marketing at Hasbro.

The six-inch height is inspired by the success of the Marvel Legends figures, and by a focus on appealing to the adult collectors looking for something more complicated than the smaller toys from previous years. It’s worth noting the 3 3/4-inch figures will still be sold under the Black Series imprint, so the kids can keep their collection going while Dad starts an all new one.

Eight figures are planned for release in 2013, and each will come with a cringe-worthy price tag of $19.99. The first four are due out in mid-August, and include the X-Wing Fighter Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, Darth Maul, and an Imperial Sandtrooper. There will probably be another character or two from the prequels in the mix, though leaving it at Darth Maul sounds fine to me. Although there is something exciting about the possibility of melting Hayden Christensen’s face off…
