Harold & Kumar Creators Want To Remake Back To The Future, Someday

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg just finished work directing the new American Pie sequel American Reunion and, they’ve been so successful that Universal Pictures has given them a two-year development deal. That sounds great, until you hear what they’d like to use that development deal to make.

If they had their druthers they’d be remaking Back to the Future.

Talking to Moviehole Hurwitz revealed, “We want Back to the Future, just come out and say it. That’s our favourite trilogy. We’re always having this conversation…”

It sounds like at first Hurwitz was half-joking, but really only half. But then Schlossberg added, “I wouldn’t want to do it now because people would be like, “Oh, there’s no way it will be as good as the original.” But 30 years from now when Spielberg’s like 90 and those guys are kind of on their way out, and those movies just look really old because we’re watching movies that are old, literally in two dimensions or something, it would be great to have all these classics that you’re able to remake.”

In other words the only reason they aren’t doing it now is because they think we, the movie’s fans, just won’t let them. But if they thought they could get away with it, it sounds like they’d be pushing Universal Pictures (the studio that made the original BTTF by the way) to let them start work on a redo.

In their defense the writer/director duo says they’d rather do a sequel than a remake… but they don’t sound like they’d pass up the chance to remake it if we let them get away with it. Let’s not. Let them get away with it that is. Back to the Future is just fine the way it is. Go with your gut guys and keep leaving it alone.
