It seems like every summer, movie theaters across the nation are jam-packed with comic book and science fiction films. Summer 2014 will be no different, with the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Godzilla, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy all on the docket. Marvel’s latest offering is the weirdest yet, and while it’s unclear how the public will take to the cosmic team of galactic peacekeepers, Guardians could be one of the hottest of the summer.

There is a lot to learn about the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, so hopefully director James Gunn will make it easy for general audiences to keep up. To get ready for the upcoming release, the good people at IGN made a video cheat sheet to introduce the Guardians of the Galaxy as “the space Avengers.”

Are you now ready for Guardians of the Galaxy? The key to making Guardians work may be not taking itself too seriously. The comic book is one of the funniest superhero comic books on Marvel’s roster, so it will be interesting to see how this will translate to the big screen. In The Avengers, The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) stole the show in the film’s third act, so look for the same thing to happen with Rocket Raccoon and Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last week, Marvel cast former WWE wrestler Dave Batista to play the revenge-seeking warrior Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy. Batista joins Parks and Recreation actor Chris Pratt, who will play the Guardians’ leader, Star-Lord. Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot remain to be cast.

Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters on August 1, 2014, in 3D.
