GOTGposterWhat a long, strange trip it’s been for Guardians of the Galaxy. When the project was first announced, we thought it was either a prank or that somebody at Marvel lost a particularly dire bet. Hard to believe, then, that it’s now one of our most-anticipated movies of 2014, and we can’t wait for the August 1 release date to get here. But here’s the great news: we don’t have to! Well, sort of. Eager Guardians fans will get to preview 17 minutes of the film in select IMAX 3D theaters on Monday, July 7. There look to be a ton of screenings scattered across the U.S., so check here to see if it’s playing in your area.

Early IMAX screenings of highly anticipated blockbusters have become a common tactic in recent years. The first one I can recall was Christopher Nolan screening the opening of The Dark Knight early, and J.J. Abrams also previewed portions of Star Trek Into Darkness in IMAX months before it hit theaters. It’s a great way to help build buzz for a movie, and that could be crucial for Guardians of the Galaxy, which has the Marvel name behind it and looks awesome, but which is still based on an obscure comic property that most mainstream moviegoers have never heard of before. It remains to be seen if larger audiences can wrap their brains and their wallets around a space movie featuring a talking raccoon, but getting nearly 20 minutes of footage out there to help build good word-of-mouth could definitely help make Guardians the success we’re hoping it will become.

Meanwhile, Guardians director James Gunn has been sharing more pictures from the upcoming space-adventure flick on his Facebook page. First up is one of the best shots yet of Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, the Kree warrior who serves as Guardians’ primary bad guy. The detail work on the costume looks amazing, even if, as has been pointed out by The Mary Sue, he does sort of look like he’s wearing a bra/panties/garter belt set on his face. Thankfully the face design looks better in this shot than it has in some of the others. I also love Gunn’s caption, included below.

Ronan

Lee Pace might be the nicest actor I’ve ever met. Which makes it stranger that he’s playing the biggest dick ever in a #Marvel movie. #gotg #guardiansofthegalaxy

Rampant space dickery, I love it. Clearly Ronan will be setting a high bar for Thanos to hurdle. Then again, Thanos has a floating throne, and that just screams “dick.”

Earlier today Gunn revealed that he’s going to be sharing a new Guardians of the Galaxy picture each day until the movie releases, sharing shots from his personal collection of behind-the-scenes images. First up, we get Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer) returning from a bathroom break to discover that his seat has been taken. Dawwwwww.
