NebulaEven though Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t a household name like Iron Man and Captain America, Marvel decided to take a risk and adapt the cult comic book into a feature film. But in spite of not being a top-tier property, Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most buzzed-about movies of summer, and now Marvel has announced that the movie will get a tie-in prequel comic-book series.

As reported on Blastr, the prequel story is called Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude #1 and centers in on a mission with Nebula (played in the movie by Karen Gillan) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) that finds the space pirate in a tough situation. We’re guessing the comic will explain why Nebula and Gamora are on the outs after working together in the space warrior army The Graces. But the main focus of the prequel is Nebula and how she became a tragic figure.

It’s also believed that the Mad Titan Thanos might have a role in the prequel story that could hint to his participation in the new movie. Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou) is also featured in the new comic book. Check out the first few pages and panels below.

Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning wrote the prequel book for Marvel Comics. The pair, along with Michael Brian Bendis, was also responsible for the 2008 reboot comic book series that brought Guardians of the Galaxy back into the Marvel fold with a new set of team members. Considering that Abnett and Lanning were in part responsible for the new movie as well, it’s good that they’re working on its prequel.

Director James Gunn recently released a new imae of Nebula on Instagram. It shows Karen Gillan in full Nebula makeup, which is extremely detailed and complex. If you’re excited about Guardians, it’s probably worth following Gunn on Instagram, because you never know what else he might share before the movie hits theaters this August.

Guardians follows Peter Jason Quill, a half-human/half-alien who is at the center of a galax-wide manhunt after he steals a mysterious orb, which is believed to be an Infinity Gem. Once he’s caught and sent to space prison, he tries to escape by building an alliance with a group of misfits and outlaws. When the new team learns about the orb’s true power, they must work together to keep the galaxy safe from Ronan the Accuser and the evil Kree Empire.

Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Benicio del Toro, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close. It opens in theaters everywhere on August 1.
