GattacaGattaca
If you’ve never seen Andrew Niccol’s Gattaca, for the love of god check it out today before it’s gone. It’s a smart, touching, beautiful flick that never seems to get the attention it deserves, a genuine genre classic. Ethan Hawke plays Vincent, a natural-born human in an era when in-vitro genetic manipulation is the norm. He’s an average guy in a world where average is no longer average, surrounded by “perfect” people, and his predisposition for genetic disorders and predicted short lifespan means he’ll never get to realize his dream of traveling to space. Instead, he works as a janitor, cleaning the offices of the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation, watching others work toward his dreams. All that changes when he teams with Jerome (Jude Law), a genetically perfect he-man who has been brought low by a crippling injury. Using borrowed DNA to help pose as Jerome, Vincent tries to maintain his ruse so that he can earn a spot on an upcoming mission to Titan, thus proving that he does have the right stuff, regardless of what his genes say. Unfortunately, a murder in his workplace puts Vincent and Jerome both in the crosshairs of investigators who could expose their deception and land them both in jail. How do you keep secrets in a world where every skin cell or hair follicle is just waiting to betray you?
