Gareth Edwards is making some classy moves with his upcoming Godzilla reboot. First he cast Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and indie darling Elisabeth Olsen in the movie, then he cast French art house actress Juliette Bincohe, and now Good Night, and Good Luck actor Jason Strathairn will Godzilla for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.

The news of Strathairn’s casting comes via Variety, but so far it’s unclear who Strathairn will play in the film. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Walking Dead) is currently writing the screenplay. With all the fantastic talent associated with Godzilla, it may actually be a reboot worth looking forward to when it stomps into theaters in 2014.

Jason Strathairn was most recently seen in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, where he played Secretary of State William Seward. He played Dr. Lee Rosen on the recently canceled Alphas for SyFy and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of American broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow in the George Clooney-directed Good Night, and Good Luck in 2005. Strathairn also played the character of Erwin “Whistler” Emory in the cult-classic Sneakers in 1992.

Principal photography will start on the Godzilla reboot this month. Warner Bros. executives were really impressed with Gareth Edwards’ work, so they pushed production to start as soon as possible. Now that the Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot has been pushed (again) to June 2014, Godzilla will have the second week of May 2014 all to itself.

The film is expected to be a more realistic take on the Japanese monster movie, and Frank Darabont has said the film is about a “terrifying force of nature.” Godzilla will be Gareth Edwards’ follow-up to his directorial debut, 2010’s Monsters.

Godzilla will stomp into theaters everywhere on May 14, 2014, in 3D.
