New New YorkBad news, everyone! After being canceled by Fox in 2003, Fox returned with new episodes on Comedy Central beginning in 2010. Now its second home network has canceled Futurama (again) after two seasons. The cable network will not produce new episodes after the series wraps up its 13-episode seventh season run.

Futurama saw a small comeback after the successful DVD sales of the Futurama animated feature film Bender’s Big Score in 2007. Fox produced three more full-length animated feature films including The Beast with a Billion Backs, Bender’s Game, and Into the Wild Green Yonder, which were also very successful and profitable for the TV studio. Along with high DVD sales of Futurama‘s original four seasons, Comedy Central took a chance to bring back the animated TV series from series co-creator David X. Cohen and Simpsons creator Matt Groening. Cohen told Entertainment Weekly, who broke the bad news:

I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news. It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be canceled at a moment’s notice.

It seems strange that Futurama is canceled again, but it has had a good run after its initial cancelation in 2003. The quality of the show was still there, so it will be interesting to see if Groening and Cohen will try again to re-re-launch the animated series. At the moment, Groening offers up:

‘We’ve been in this situation before and it’s tempting when you’re doing episodes that are as good or better than anything you’ve ever done to continue doing it,’ he said. ‘We’re catching our breath and seeing what the fans have to say.’

With 140 episodes and 7 seasons of quality animated science fiction, it’s safe to say that Futurama had an extraordinary run and will be missed. And we still have 13 more episodes featuring the wacky crew of the Planet Express delivery service to look forward to watching.

Futurama will return on June 19th on Comedy Central. Watch the handmade Futurama intro below:
