Director Andrew Kightlinger describes his post-apocalyptic action thriller Dust of War as “Mad Max meets Terrence Malick.” From the look of this bleak new trailer, that seems like an apt depiction of the movie. You have the brutality of vicious gangs paired with the stark beauty of films like Badlands. Check it out for yourself.

Filmed on location in South Dakota, Dust of War makes full use of the stark, sparse landscape. The Badlands are an ideal setting for a desolate future. So far there’s no explanation of how exactly the world ended, but from the blanched-out look of the world, it’s a pretty safe guess that there’s either some sort of environmental catastrophe or a wide-spread conflict that results in a barren wasteland.

Set on the post-apocalyptic American Frontier, Dust of War tells the story of a soldier who has to rescue and protect a girl who may just be the savior of the human race. He’s also compelled to team up with a pair of unsavory characters—a grizzled war veteran and an untrustworthy thief—in order to keep the girl safe and protect her from a vicious warlord. Think the Humungus from Road Warrior, only more of a biker with no mask, and you’ve got a pretty good idea of what they’re up against. There also appears to be some sort of travelling circus. We’ll have to wait and see about that last part.

There’s definite potential in this trailer. Dust of War has a grim aesthetic necessary for a post-apocalyptic action film. And any time you have a villain with a big beard and a shaved head, you’re on the right track. The film stars several familiar faces from low-budget sci-fi, including Tony Todd (Candyman), Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth), and Gary Graham (Robot Jox).
