Almost HumanWhen the 2013-2014 television season kicks off this fall, sci-fi fans will have a number of new options to comb through. Two of the more interesting ones come courtesy of Fox. After all, who besides Fox would air the futuristic cop show Almost Human, and the time traveling historical fiction joint Sleepy Hollow. We’ve seen bits and pieces from both shows, and now we have official cast photos from each.

Set 35 years in the from now, Almost Human follows a cop named John Kennex, played by Karl Urban. In this particular iteration of the future, crime has gotten so out of hand that the police force issues every officer a robotic partner. Because he’s a rebel who plays by his own rules, Kennex takes issue with his new automated sidekick, Dorian (Michael Ealy). But that’s too bad for him, because the duo will have to form an uneasy trust as they uncover a vast, spiraling conspiracy.

Out of the two shows, Almost Human is the one I’m most excited about. The handful of clips and trailers we’ve seen make it look pretty damn good, and the buzz it created coming out of San Diego Comic-Con has been almost entirely positive. The cast also includes Minka Kelly and Lily Taylor.

Sleepy HollowSleepy Hollow is something of a different animal. I’m curious to see this in the same way that I always have to look at a the scene of a car crash when I drive by, though what I may see could be horrific and traumatizing. Even the concept sounds like a stretch. A twist on Washington Irving’s classic, Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) is transported 250 years into the future, into a modern day incarnation of the town of Sleepy Hollow, only to be compelled to solve a mystery that dates back to his day. He’ll have to explain to present dwellers things like, why there is a dude with no head, the Headless Horeseman, running around committing all manner of dastardly deeds.

There’s talk of Free Masons, people don’t believe that he is who he says he is (how can you not believe him, who else would dress like that?), and history is bound to repeat itself. The rest of the cast includes Clancy Brown (Highlander), Orlando Jones (Evolution), John Cho (Star Trek), and Katia Winter (Dexter). Perhaps it will turn out okay in the end, but it looks silly and sounds absurd. I’ll give it a shot, but I expect very little.

Not only do will these two shows air on the same network, but they also share some creative DNA. Almost Human is the brainchild of J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman. Those two worked on Fringe, which was created by Abrams, Roberto Orci, and Alex Kurtzman. Kurtzman and Orci, along with Len Wisemen (Underworld) and Philip Iscove, created Sleepy Hollow. So they both spring from the same family tree. Sleepy Hollow and Almost Human will also air on Monday nights, premiering on September 16 and November 4, respectively.
