Xenophobia is a common fear. In fact, I have it, and maybe I can enlighten you (without being assholish or receiving a such comment) Firstly, it's not their sheer strength, claws, or teeth that get you - it's more a psychological aspect. The fear comes from the abysmal unknown. You don't know what it's capable of, how it thinks, what it wants, you just know that it's ballsy enough to hunt earths apex predator without hesitation. I've always thought of an encounter like a REM malfunction - imagine by the time you see it, it's already attacking you by it's presence whether it knows your there or not. It grabs hold psychically of the minute amount of fear you possess and then amplifies it to the point of paralysis. Then, wherever it is, it notices you. A violent ringing/ screeching tears through your brain - all of these things are "possible" as we don't know anything about stereotypical little green men in film except they come in peace ... which is not the case.

If you want to see the first use of 'found footage' film, see "The Last Broadcast" (1998). The guys who did Blair Witch stole from this movie, completely. Not only is The Last Broadcast a superior movie, it doesn't have a bunch of nonsensical people in it that you WANT to see hurt. Bad.

JJ Abrams has of course been a big fan of this stuff, most of it rubbish, probably in the belief that it's film-that-makes-itself or something. But if you want to see it done well, originally, see The Last Broadcast.

Rec was a really scary movie and Trollhunter was really entertaining, you can use the found footage technique to tell interesting stories.

That being said, I don't have faith for this Report 51 movie, and I'm a huge fan of dinosaurs.

So if found footage films are overused as a cinematographic style, what does that make traditionally filmed movies? I like found footage films, they have a lot of potential, and some of them--like Lunopolis--have been quite good. If it's integral to the story, it's not a gimmick.
